Description : The plaque is painted black, with painted on white lettering. The pub name is shadowed in red. Varnished.
Transcription : A Tavern has stood on this site / since the 16th Century. Originally it backed / on to the waterfron, known as 'Smarts Quay' / the present building dates back to the / reign of Queen Anne. / In the 18th & 19th Cent. The Inn gained a / reputation as a 'Shanghai Tavern'. The / practice of Shanghaing was to drug a / seamans ale & then sell him to a ships / Master. The poor soul usually woke up / to find himself on passage to the Orient / hence the name 'Shanghai'. / Fortunately, we no longer carry out / this practice. So, its safe to come on in and enjoy our grand old tavern.
