Object number : 1965.12.21

Object Name : Vase

Physical Description : Small vase with tall, narrow neck. Light cream and brown mottled glaze. 'Bumps' protruding from the surface are highlighted with brown lines radiating from them. Reminiscent of shells or limpets.

Historical associations : The Martin Brothers also turned to the river and sea for their inspiration. This vase uses the clay body to create a bumpy texture. It is then hand-painted to emphasise these bumps; they look like shells. Perhaps the Martin Brothers found similar barnacles stuck to the walls of the canal near their factory in London?
