Object number : 1952.24
Object Name : Tobacco Jar (Wally Bird)
Physical Description : Trio of birds on a rectangular base. Central bird has wings around birds on either side. The birds form 3 separate pots, each with a lid (head). Decorated in brown, beige, blue and green salt-glaze.
Historical associations : These birds look very human. Each has a different expression, giving each a separate personality. With his wings - emulating arms - around the birds at his side, the larger central bird gives a very human, caring gesture. This trio of birds is very rare. Maybe Robert Wallace Martin was depicting his three brothers in bird form ?
