Object Name : Sovereign holder
General Description : Circular metal sovereign holder with belt or garter around a shield engraved on the front. It opens by pushing down on the button at the top. A spring inside with a curved edge keeps the sovereign in place.
Additional information : Sovereign cases such as this were extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, usually made to be carried at one end of a gentleman's 'Albert' or watch chain. The sovereign was a gold coin first issued in 1489. It discontinued after 1604 but restarted again in 1817. The coin would be held in place by a spring mechanism in a short cylinder. Sovereign holders were made in different styles including those designed to hold more than one coin or half sovereigns.
