Object Name : Necklace

General Description : Shell and bead collar necklace with brass clasp, strung on cotton thread.

Additional information : In the Victorian period, more jewellery appeared than in any other era before it. One of the principal reasons was the availability and relative affordability of materials such as metals and silver which, previously, had been reserved only for the very wealthy. Jewellery fashion changed with dress fashion and the use of semi-precious materials meant that beautiful pieces could be worn by many more social classes. This necklace is an example where relatively cheap materials - glass beads and shell - have been arranged together to make a stunning impact.
