General Description : Man's black military cap with woollen top, leather peak and insert and metallic wreath. Royal Navy crest on the front. Silk lining inside with the maker's logo: 'Gieves Ltd, London W1'.

Additional information : This cap belonged to Commander (Engineer) JHB Dathan of the Royal Navy. As part of his long career in the navy, Commander (E) Dathan joined the HMS Belfast in 1942 where it was undergoing repairs in the Devonport dockyard, Plymouth. At this time, the famous tailor Gieves Ltd of London had an outlet on Mutley Plain in Plymouth. Dathan bought his uniform from this shop in 1942 before he left with the HMS Belfast to fight in the World War 11 Normandy landings. (Kindly donated by Mr & Mrs R Dathan).
