Object Name : Card case

General Description : rectangular card case covered in mother of pearl and abalone shell diamond shapes. Side hinged to lid and lines with dark blue velvet. Inside is a card printed with 'Miss Broady, Brunswick House, Stretford'.

Additional information : Card cases were used throughout the 19th Century and well into the 20th Century when calling and leaving cards was an important social activity. Cards for ladies were a specified size and larger than those for men. They had to be printed in a carefully prescribed way. Card cases were made in a wide variety of materials including silver, mother of pearl and tortoiseshell.
