Object Name : Button hook
General Description : Metal button hook with an imitation ivory handle
Additional information : In the 19th century and early 20th century women wore boots fastened on each side with a number of buttons. Stiff corsets made bending difficult so a button hook was a valuable accessory. Medium sized hooks could be used for footwear but were mostly used to fasten the numberous buttons on the bodices of dresses. Handles were made in a variety of materials and frequently feature novelties such as birds, fish and animals.
